Pressure Washing Concrete Guide
Pressure Washing Concrete Guide
Foundation Contractor Adelaide pressure washers have a bit of a reputation.
People buy one on a Saturday morning, spend the afternoon cleaning the driveway, then stand back thinking they’ve just discovered a miracle.
Sometimes they have.
Other times they’ve accidentally taken a few years off the life of the concrete.
That might sound dramatic, but after working on driveways across Adelaide for more than two decades, I’ve seen plenty of surfaces damaged by good intentions rather than bad workmanship.
Pressure washing is one of the best ways to freshen up concrete.
It’s also one of the easiest ways to get it wrong.
Concrete is tough… but not indestructible
Most people assume concrete can handle anything because it’s hard.
That’s only half the story.
The surface is what protects everything underneath. Hit it with too much pressure from too close, and you can start wearing away that top layer.
Here’s where people get caught out.
They see a stubborn stain, move the nozzle closer and keep blasting until it disappears.
The stain might go.
So might part of the concrete finish.
Once that surface has been damaged, there’s no simple way to put it back.
Start gently
One thing we’ve noticed is that homeowners often begin with the highest pressure setting instead of the lowest.
Do the opposite.
Start further back. Use moderate pressure. Work in slow, even passes.
If the dirt doesn’t come away straight away, don’t panic.
Sometimes it needs a second pass rather than more force.
You’ll usually get a better result by letting the machine do the work instead of trying to strip the surface in one hit.
Not every driveway should be treated the same
A standard concrete driveway and an exposed aggregate driveway don’t respond exactly the same way.
Exposed aggregate has texture, which means dirt settles differently. It also means aggressive pressure washing can loosen the appearance of the exposed stones over time if it’s done carelessly.
Coloured concrete deserves a bit of care too.
The finish isn’t something you want to wear away simply because you were trying to remove a few tyre marks.
Every surface has its own sweet spot.
Timing makes a difference
The funny thing is, people often wait until the driveway looks terrible before cleaning it.
By then, dirt, mould, leaf stains and oil have had months—or even years—to settle in.
A light clean every now and then is much easier than trying to rescue a neglected driveway.
Adelaide’s seasons play their part as well.
Autumn leaves leave tannin stains.
Winter encourages mould in shady spots.
Summer bakes dust and grime onto the surface.
Keeping on top of it throughout the year saves a lot of effort later.
A few habits worth remembering
Pressure washing works best when it’s part of regular maintenance, not a once-every-five-years event.
A few simple tips make all the difference:
- Sweep away loose dirt before using the pressure washer.
- Start with lower pressure and increase only if needed.
- Keep the nozzle moving instead of focusing on one spot.
- Use a concrete cleaner first for stubborn stains.
- Reseal the surface when appropriate to help keep it protected.
Most of the time, patience gets a better result than maximum pressure.
After doing hundreds of driveways, I’ve realised people often judge concrete by how it looks rather than how healthy it actually is. A clean driveway certainly looks impressive, but protecting the surface while you’re cleaning it is what keeps it looking good for years to come.
At Pro Concreting Adelaide, we believe maintaining concrete should be straightforward, not complicated. If you’re unsure how to clean your driveway safely or you’re planning a new concrete project that will stay looking great with minimal maintenance, we’re always happy to offer practical advice and a no-obligation quote.
